Reading

As a reader, it is indisputable that I have grown over the semesters in my freshman year. This year I have read, Absolute True Diary of a Part Time Indian, Purple Hibiscus, Lord of the Flies, the Russian's Book to WW2, Loners, CHERUB, and I am currently reading Macbeth. Let's start with a reading response early in the year, Reading Response for Loners was the first reading response written by me this year. As I was reading the reading response I obviously did not have an extensive vocabulary; I could tell by the frequent use of similar words and the usage of words such as "good" and "bad." Clearly, I also did not look for any meaning in between the lines within the book, I cared too much about the literary devices that were used for the book, Loners. Knowing this, I am now going to compare Reading Response for Loners to another reading response later in the year (second semester). Reading Response for ATDPTI is the reading response I chose as the second. In the second reading response, there was obviously a change in vocabulary and bold transitions between sentences. I tried to make clear the plot of the book by analyzing text. he difference is definitely noticeable amongst the two reading responses and also reflects to my growth as a reader this year.

Writing Center Experience

My writing center experience was fairly brief and was actually for this portfolio project. I was not confident in the page titled "About Me" and was hoping to get some strong revisions for the paper and apply the new knowledge to other papers. What I was hoping to revise was the grammar, fluidity of the work, grammar was the primary problem. My writing fellow, to my surprise, could not find a grammatical issue. What my writing fellow advised me to do was to give more about "me" as a student.

Goals For Next Year

Sophomore year is close and it is time I set an objective for next year as an English student. Obviously, sentence fluency, transition, and revision ability are number one priority problems I am set to fix; there are other devices in writing that when I use are problematic. Examples being personification, point-of-view, and similes. With these goals set in mind I want to go above and beyond and aspire to be one who writes poetry comfortably. My goals in writing set for sophomore year will help me greatly and ensure strong writing.

Working

When there are strengths there are weaknesses, while writing some of my weaknesses are obvious and some aren't. I would so my most significant weakness is sentence fluency, the flow of language is arguably what I struggle with most. On many occasions during revision I am confronted with a familiar choppy writing on the page. Lately, I've been using transition words and have applied them to text, although there is progress, my sentence fluency is far from perfection. Presentation is a simple problem that is seemingly easy to correct. Unfortunately, I make many mistakes with MLA format, such as correct date, works cited formation, and indentation. Luckily, being aware of the problem will only help me fix the issues.
